Bill Hicks actually funny
BYLINE KATHY McTEE
Back in those golden junior-high-school days, Steve Martin, then-god of the 12-to-16-year-old set, recorded the LP Comedy Is Not Pretty. Wild 'n' crazy mania was about over, but the name of his album still hits it right on the head, especially if you work on the media end of things. Comedians are basically a dime a dozen - when one comes along who has a clue, and who doesn't make too many jokes about hating his wife despite the fact that she has really big breasts, it's a big deal. Bill Hicks is one of the few, the proud, the actually funny - a hometown boy who's made the comedy big time, or the medium time at least. He's done Letterman several times, and bopped all over the country touring comedy clubs; we saw him at the old Comedy Workshop back in 1983 doing a routine about dealing with crazed Southern relatives at family gatherings. It was great. Tonight, it'll be crowded, so call early. Bill Hicks at the Comedy Workshop, 1415 Lavaca St. through Sunday.
